How Do You Know If Glasses Have Blue Light Filter?

how do you know if glasses have blue light filter?

It’s difficult to escape blue light as not only does it emanate from the screens we use but also from the sun. While there are some health benefits to blue light, including a boost to our cognitive functions and mood levels, there are negative side effects too. These can be mitigated with a special pair of blue light filter glasses.

Do My Glasses Have A Blue Light Filter?

If you haven’t specifically ordered glasses with a blue light filter then the answer is likely to be no. Blue light eyewear is available but you are unlikely to own a pair if you haven’t requested blue lens glasses from a retailer or your optometrist.

What Do Blue Light Filter Glasses Look Like?

When blue light filter glasses first came on the scene, they were noticeable because of the slightly yellow or amber lenses they came with. These colors were created by the special coating that was placed on the lenses to filter out blue light and glasses of this description can still be bought today.

However, due to the advances in technology, the special coating on many of today’s lenses is barely noticeable. This is especially true in the case of blue lens glasses that are designed for daytime use, as they are often clear in design with no noticeable difference from a regular pair of lenses.

How Do I Know If The Blue Light Filter On My Glasses Is Effective?

After splashing out on a new pair of blue light filter glasses, you need to know that they are doing what they are supposed to. Unfortunately, not all glasses are created equal and there are many disreputable retailers online claiming that their blue light filter glasses are effective, when in fact they aren’t! There could also be cases where they don’t have a blue light filter at all!

To ensure your glasses do have a filter that can block out blue light, you should contact the retailer you bought them from. Ask them for a transmittance spectrum report as this will show you what percentage of light is passing through the lenses you have bought. To be effective, blue light glasses should filter at least 30% of blue light so this is something to look out for. If your retailer can’t make the report available, you can also visit your optometrist, as they might have the tools needed to test your glasses.

There are tests you can do at home too. A simple thing to do is put your glasses on and see what color light is reflecting off your lenses. If it’s blue then you can be confident some blue light is being filtered out. But if it’s purple, this is a sign that the glasses aren’t as effective as they should be.

Another way to test your blue light glasses is to use an RGB color circle test. The blue part of the color circle should appear darker or black if your glasses are filtering out blue light effectively. If you’re using blue light glasses for nighttime use, the green section should appear darker as well.
